Diversity, dynamics and biogeography of Chilean benthic nearshore ecosystems: an overview and guidelines for conservation RChHN
FERNANDEZ,MIRIAM; JARAMILLO,EDUARDO; MARQUET,PABLO A; MORENO,CARLOS A; NAVARRETE,SERGIO A; OJEDA,F. PATRICIO; VALDOVINOS,CLAUDIO R; VASQUEZ,JULIO A.
Despite Chile has been one of the pioneering countries in studies of human impact on marine communities, and despite the enormous economic and social significance that the marine environment has for the country, the development of marine conservation programs and the scientific basis for sustainability has not kept pace, with the exploitation rate of marine fisheries and the increasing use of the coast for other purposes. Although we think that the establishment of any conservation policies along the vast coastline of Chile must be based on a multitude of approaches and considerations, scientific, biological, and ecological principles should guide much of these efforts. In this paper, we attempt to present a general overview of the current knowledge about...

Drivers of floristic variation in biogeographic transitions: insights from the ecotone between the largest biogeographic domains of South America Acta Botanica
Souza,Loana Araújo Silva; Eisenlohr,Pedro V..
ABSTRACT Ecological transitions usually represent vulnerable ecosystems and high biodiversity. Investigating their drivers is important from both biogeographic and conservationist perspectives. One of these transitions is situated between the two largest biogeographic domains of South America - the Amazon and the Cerrado. We evaluated variation in tree floristic composition throughout this transition and assessed which factors explain this variation. We used 17,240 records of occurrences of 2,530 tree species from the NeotropTree database. We investigated variation in floristic composition using UPGMA cluster analysis with bootstrap resampling and NMDS ordination, and modeled the distribution of species in relation to environmental and spatial predictors...

Epiphytic angiosperms in a mountain forest in southern Bahia, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Leitman,Paula; Amorim,André; Menini Neto,Luiz; Forzza,Rafaela C..
The Atlantic Forest in southern Bahia State, Brazil, has high levels of diversity and vascular plant endemism. There have been few floristic surveys of the mountain forests there, however, especially those focusing on herbs and canopy plants, with studies of Atlantic Forest epiphytes having been limited to the southern and southeastern region of that country. The present study therefore surveyed the epiphytic angiosperms in the Serra das Lontras National Park (SLNP), the distribution of their species among genera and families, and their biogeographical patterns. Fieldwork was performed between February 2011 and March 2012. Collections were made along roads and trails and phorophytes were occasionally climbed and fallen trees and branches examined in order...
